Controlling speech highlighting
You can specify whether or not you want the text, or the background of the text, highlighted as it is read aloud. You do this using the options in the View menu. If you cannot see this menu, click here.
To control text highlighting, click on the View menu and select either:

Word Highlighting - select this option if you want each word, and the background of the text, highlighted as it is read aloud. Browsealoud automatically highlights text in this way, unless you specify otherwise. An example is shown below:

Background Highlighting - select this option if you want only the background of the text highlighted as it is read aloud. An example is shown below:

If required, you can deselect both of these options so that no text is highlighted as it is read aloud.
You can change the colour of the highlighted text in Preferences.
