Website Owners

Does BrowseAloud need Adobe Flash to run?

BrowseAloud needs Flash to run on Internet Explorer, Firefox and - if using a browser other than Google Chrome - Android.

I am using Firefox and have BrowseAloud installed and also trying to use BrowseAloud but the toolbar is not appearing correctly?

When you install the BrowseAloud install version it inserts a Plugin into Firefox > Add Ons > Extensions called TexthelpHighlighter. This enables the BrowseAloud install version to read within Firefox.

If you wish to use the BrowseAloud Toolbar within Firefox you firstly have to disable the TexthelpHighlighter add on in the Extensions folder.

If you click on the drop down arrow beside the Firefox button on the top left hand side of the Browser window and select Add-ons > Extensions, you can see the extension TexthelpHighlighter. Select disable.

When you do this you will see BrowseAloud running correctly.

My PDF document seems to be missing some translate languages?

The PDF document viewer does not support right to left languages at this time: Arabic, Urdu, Hebrew, Yiddish and Farsi

My website has Frames, why is BrowseAloud Plus not appearing?

BrowseAloud will not appear on sites with Frames.

Why do I not have a Simplify Button on my Toolbar?

The Simplify button only works with IE 9 and above, it is not compatible with IE 7 or IE8.

If you are using IE9 or above or Firefox, Chrome and it is still not appearing the site owner has disabled the feature for their site.

Why does my page not have Summarise when I Simplify it?

The Summarise feature is currently only available on English content websites.If it is an English site and the Summarise button is still not appearing the site owner has disabled the feature for their site.

Do I need to activate BrowseAloud on each page of an enabled site?

Yes, on each page you wish to be read you must choose to activate BrowseAloud.

Does BrowseAloud need Adobe Flash to run?

No, BrowseAloud only reads BrowseAloud-enabled sites.

Yes, BrowseAloud does read secure websites.

I don’t see my device or browser in the instructions, will BrowseAloud work on my device/browser?

If your device/browser supports HTML5 BrowseAloud may work. We have tested the major browsers for each platform/device, but if you experience issues with your browser we recommend you use one of the tested browsers:

 

Android:

  • Google Chrome (Note: BrowseAloud Plus will prompt you to download Chrome if you do not already have it on your device).

Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch:

  • Safari.

Windows:

  • IE 8-11
  • Chrome
  • Firefox.
I made a change on one device via Settings and it did not show on my other devices when I loaded my Settings?

If you are logged in and make a settings change you must refresh the page on other devices for the change to apply.

What is the maximum size for an MP3 I can create?

The size limit is set at 13,000 characters of text.

Where do the MP3 files download?

Your Internet browser decides where the MP3 files are downloaded to. It will be the same location as where any other files you download from the Internet are saved to.

By default the locations are for Windows 7 / 8 :

Chrome: C:\Users\*USERNAME*\Downloads

Firefox: C:\Users\*USERNAME\Downloads

Internet Explorer: You are asked for a location to save to.

Why do I not have a Simplify Button on my Toolbar?

Why do I not have a Translate Button?

The site may have opted out of translation as they have their own translation or the site owner has disabled the feature for their site. The site/page may be on a secure site or section of a site. We do not support translation on secure content as this would involve sending content to third parties.

Why does my page not have Summarise when I Simplify it?

The Summarise feature is currently only available on English content websites.If it is an English site and the Summarise button is still not appearing the site owner has disabled the feature for their site.

Why is my BrowseAloud Toolbar not appearing?

On some websites there may be an animation, video/movies, moving logo or similar at the top of the page where BrowseAloud would normally appear. BrowseAloud sometimes appears under these visual elements. Please try refreshing the page, then scrolling down the page and reactivating BrowseAloud.

Why is my BrowseAloud toolbar small?

On small screen devices, or devices that report themselves as being phones BrowseAloud will use a smaller toolbar. This toolbar is scrollable and will allow the user to use the other features of BrowseAloud.
